In a challenging economic environment, it can be easy to lose sight of longer term goals as we focus on short term, day to day operations. Although keeping a close eye on every element of design, manufacture and all aspects of the business is critical in the current environment, we should not forget we need continually to identify and evaluate new opportunities.
Indeed, there is a school of thought that says downturns are particularly good times to spot opportunities and to create strategies and plans that will allow companies to gain advantage when the upturn comes. It may be a cliché, but there is some truth in the proverb ‘necessity is the mother of invention’.
In the case of the electronics industry, for example, the downturn can stimulate creativity - whether it’s looking at new designs or identifying new and more profitable applications or geographic markets for the future.
Opportunities can arise in many forms. Designers may find opportunities in new technologies or techniques that further enhance competitive advantage. Project teams may identify opportunities for further reduction in development times. On the supply chain side, this might be the perfect time and opportunity to evaluate suppliers and inventory levels and to rationalise both.
