A new family of multiple output DC/DC µModule regulators from Linear Technology reduces the number of components needed and the cost associated with component insertion on to a PCB, eliminating layout errors and offering a ready-made solution for design engineers.



The latest generations of medium/high-end Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) devices often need as many as six different voltage rails. PC boards that use such FPGAs are often very densely populated with components. This real estate issue presents a problem to system designers who want to simplify layout, improve performance and reduce component count - especially for the supporting circuitry (such as that needed for DC/DC regulation).

Developed by Linear Technology, a new family of DC/DC µModule regulators with multiple outputs and inputs can reduce the number of components and the cost associated with component insertion on to PCB, eliminate layout errors and offer design engineers a ready-made solution. Only a few external components are needed since switching controllers, MOSFETs, inductors and other support components are all integrated within a compact surface-mount package.

The LTM4616 is a complete dual-output, two phase, 8A per channel switch-mode regulator in a 15mm × 15mm LGA package. Included in the device are the switching controller, inductor, power FETs and all support components. Operating from an input voltage range of 2.7V to 5.5V, the LTM4616 supports two outputs in a voltage range of 0.6V to 5V, set by a single external resistor. This high-efficiency design delivers up to 8A continuous current (10A peak) from each output.

The LTM4615 is a complete 4A dual-output, switching mode DC/DC power supply with an additional 1.5A Very Low Drop-Out (VLDO) linear regulator. The dual 4A DC/DC converters operate over an input voltage range of 2.375V to 5.5V; the VLDO operates from a 1.14V to 3.5V input. The LTM4615 supports output voltages ranging from 0.8V to 5V for the DC/DC converters and 0.4V to 2.6V for the VLDO.

The LTM4614 can regulate two voltages from 0.8V to 5.0V at up to 4A each, or one output voltage at up to 8A by sharing current from both outputs. It can operate from two different supply rails, ranging from 2.375V to 5.5V, or from one input supply by tying the input pins together.
