Imitates human eye response through infrared filtering epoxy
Ambient light sensors are used to detect light in a manner similar to the human eye. They are most commonly employed in industrial lighting, consumer electronics and automotive systems, where they allow settings to be automatically altered in response to the changing light conditions of the surrounding environment. By turning on, turning off, or adjusting features, these sensors can help conserve battery power or provide extra safety while eliminating the need for manual intervention.



The Vishay TEMD6200FX01 is a high-speed, high sensitivity PIN photodiode in a miniature, flat plastic, 0805-sized, surface mount package. Its spectral sensitivity covers the entire visible spectrum, from 430nm up to 610nm, with a peak wavelength of 540nm. Its ability to mimic human light response, thanks to a proprietary, infrared filtering epoxy technology, means that it is highly suited to the automatic control of LCD brightness and keypad backlighting, as well as automotive driver comfort/safety features.

The device has a floor life of 168 hours and a Moisture Sensitivity Level (MSL) of 3, in accordance with J-STD-020. Its operating temperature range spans from -40°C to +100°C. It offers an angle of half sensitivity of 60° and a radiant sensitive area of 0.27mm², which provides a typical output current of 0.04µA at a 100lx illumination of a CIE illuminant A light source. Its extremely linear behaviour over illumination levels and operating temperature range makes this photo-pin-diode especially suitable in applications where rather large temperature changes are recognised.

The sensor also serves as an environmentally friendly alternative to cadmium-based photo resistors, the elimination of which has been mandated by RoHS legislation. It is also qualified in accordance with AEC-Q101 automotive standard.
